Freddie Roach gets reality series on HBO

Having covered Freddie Roach, this one looks good from HBO...

HBO AND FILMMAKER PETER BERG TEAM UP TO PRESENT ON FREDDIE ROACH, AN INNOVATIVE NEW REALITY SERIES DEBUTING IN 2012

Emmy® Nominee Berg Directs And Executive Produces; Jim Lampley, Sarah Aubrey And Michael Price Also Executive Produce

Los Angeles, May 24, 2011
– HBO and filmmaker Peter Berg will team up for the innovative new primetime reality series ON FREDDIE ROACH, directed and executive produced by Emmy® nominee Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) and executive produced by Jim Lampley, Sarah Aubrey and Michael Price, it was announced today by HBO.

Presented by HBO and a co-production of Film 44 and Atticus Entertainment, the cinéma-vérité series focuses on Freddie Roach, the world-famous boxing trainer who owns and operates the famed Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood, where he has produced a host of world champions. The cameras will follow Roach as he works with future stars, engages the continuous stream of celebrity visitors to his gym, finds time to sort through and balance his myriad of outside interests, and manages his new role with USA Boxing, all while fighting Parkinson’s disease, an ailment very likely linked to his own boxing past. The six-episode series is set to debut in early 2012.

“We are truly excited about this innovative new reality series that will allow HBO to partner with Peter Berg,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “Freddie Roach is an extraordinary person and many of our subscribers are familiar with his superior work in training some of the world’s premier fighters. This will be a fascinating and unique series.”

“HBO’s enthusiasm in supporting a less-conventional, vérité style of storytelling is why they continue to create original and truly innovative programming,” said Peter Berg. “It’s why they are the best and we are very excited to be working with them.”

A native of Dedham, Mass., Freddie Roach has an extensive amateur boxing background. He fought as a professional under the tutelage of legendary Hall of Fame trainer Eddie Futch, ending his professional boxing career in 1987 with a record of 41 wins and 13 losses. Upon retiring, Roach became Futch’s apprentice. In 1992, Mickey Rourke financed his first gym, the Outlaw Boxing Club. Roach has trained more than 20 world champions, including Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Oscar de la Hoya and Mike Tyson. He has been honored five times as Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced a unique partnership with Roach in an effort to ensure that America’s top amateur fighters have access to the finest training in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This partnership will create a program allowing up to ten Olympic hopefuls to train at the Wild Card Gym, which has become synonymous with world-class performance.

The 51-year-old bachelor lives next door to his mother, just a few miles from Wild Card. Roach has been in the corner for some of the most memorable moments of the past few years on HBO Sports’ flagship “World Championship Boxing” series, including the consensus 2010 Fight of the Year, when Amir Khan defeated Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.

From HBO Sports -

HBO SPORTS HEADS NORTH OF THE BORDER FOR AN EXPLOSIVE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DOUBLEHEADER WHEN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®: JEAN PASCAL VS. BERNARD HOPKINS II
AND CHAD DAWSON VS. ADRIAN DIACONU IS SEEN LIVE SATURDAY, MAY 21 ON HBO

HBO Sports serves up a double dose of hard-hitting action when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: JEAN PASCAL VS. BERNARD HOPKINS II AND CHAD DAWSON VS. ADRIAN DIACONU is presented live SATURDAY, MAY 21 (10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT) from the Bell Centre in Montreal, exclusively on HBO. The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING team will be ringside for the event, which will be closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired, presented in HDTV and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

Other HBO playdates: May 22 (11:00 a.m.) and 23 (11:15 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: May 22 (4:30 p.m.) and 24 (11:00 p.m.)

Light heavyweight titleholder Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs) will go toe-to-toe in his hometown with one of boxing’s legendary figures, former middleweight and former light heavyweight champ Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KOs) of Philadelphia in a highly anticipated 12-round title rematch. In his second appearance on HBO, following an upset of Chad Dawson last August, the Haitian-born Pascal is notorious for his lighting speed ring movement and virtually indefensible flurries of punches.

Making his 18th appearance on HBO, the ageless Bernard Hopkins has fought some of the most intriguing fights of the last ten years, including memorable showdowns with Felix Trinidad, Oscar de la Hoya, Antonio Tarver and Kelly Pavlik. Now 46, he is once again in peak physical shape, enabling him to be quicker and fresher at the end of fights than younger opponents.

Pascal and Hopkins originally faced off last December in Quebec City, with the bout ending in a hard-fought draw. Although Pascal had him reeling early on, Hopkins maintained his composure and dominated the later rounds. Now, Hopkins seeks to claim the glory and the title that eluded him last December. If he beats Pascal, Hopkins will become the oldest world champion in boxing history.

The highly charged opening bout features two former light heavyweight titleholders, as Chad Dawson (29-1, 17 KOs) of New Haven, Conn. meets Romanian powerhouse Adrian Diaconu (27-2, 15 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout. This is a pivotal fight for Dawson, who seeks to rebound from his first professional loss with the help of his new trainer, Hall of Famer Emanuel Steward. The hard-hitting Diaconu views the bout as a golden opportunity to regain his former glory in the light heavyweight division.

All HBO boxing events are presented in HDTV. HBO viewers must have access to the HBO HDTV channel to watch HBO programming in high definition.
