Wells on being selected to the All-Star Team for the first time: “I remember - Texas. It was smokin’ hot! I didn’t come in until later in the game so my nerves were kinda settled. But what you get in that atmosphere…all the players….

Ripken on being selected to the All-Star Team for the first time: “The best part of being in the All-Star Game is you get to be teammates with the game’s greatest players in your league. It’s a special, special room to be in.”

More than anything else, you know, it’s a game and there are quite a few guys in that clubhouse who’ve been through it before. Washington on what factored into CC Sabathia not making the A.L. All-Star Team: “The players chose five starters and CC is the sixth guy. If anybody bails out because they pitch on Sunday, CC is in line to make it.”

Washington on who he is most happy for making the A.L. All-Star Team: “I’m most happy for C.J. Wilson. He’s a workhorse. He never complains. He has a workmanlike attitude and I’m most happy for him. He’s certainly putting together a heck of a year for the Texas Rangers.”

Bochy on handling a great pitching staff and stretching out his starter for three innings: “We have talked about stretching these guys out, the starters. Vogelsong would be our long guy. We have to have a plan in case the game goes 16 innings we have to have enough pitchers.”

Bochy on memories of 1999 managing the All-Star Game: “First of all, ’99 was in Boston with Ted Williams. It was a special day with all the legends out there. That’s my biggest memory.”

On noticeable absences:

Ripken on his most noticeable absentees that didn’t make the All-Star Teams: ”I thought [Atlanta’s] Tommy Hansen. Sometimes you’re victimized by how good the other starters on your team are. Maybe you should expand the rosters even a little more.”

Eckersley on the toughest positions and the most noticeable absence: “I was telling you before about playing the wrong position in both leagues. I think first base is like that. [Ryan] Howard in Philly with 60 RBIs. [New York Yankees Mark] Texeira with 25 home runs. There’s two guys there. Then you talk about the pitchers. [Jon] Lester is having a good year in Boston….”

Wells on most noticeable absences: “I agree with you on Lester. When you see guys with 10 wins, it’s tough you can’t take all the guys.”

Ripken: “Should there be a stat that says you’re automatically in? Should 10 wins be enough? If you’re leading the league in home runs or RBIs? Let’s change the rule.” 

TBS game analyst John Smoltz weighing in on his thoughts on noticeable absentee CC Sabathia: “I think CC Sabathia should be on this team. You can probably do another show on the guys that don’t get in.”

2011 MLB All-Star Game Rosters Announced Exclusively on TBS on Sunday, July 3rd at Noon (ET)

Sunday MLB on TBS features Yankees @ Mets at 1 p.m. (ET)

The 2011 American League and National League MLB All-Star teams will be revealed exclusively on TBS on Sunday, July 3rd at Noon (ET) during the Major League Baseball All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Taco Bell. Host Matt Winer will be joined by analysts Dennis Eckersley, Cal Ripken and David Wells to make the announcements and provide analysis on the selections. The show also will feature interviews with All-Star Game managers Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers and Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants.



The 2011 MLB All-Star Game will be held at Chase Field in Phoenix on Tuesday, July 12th. The American and National League All-Star Teams will have eight starters elected via the fan balloting program. The pitchers and reserves for both squads will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by All-Star managers Washington and Bochy, in conjunction with Major League Baseball.

Following the show, “Sunday MLB on TBS” will continue at 1 p.m. (ET) when Jose Reyes and the New York Mets host their cross-town rivals Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees at Citi Field. Freddy Garcia is scheduled to start for the Yankees against the Mets’ probable starter R.A. Dickey. Ernie Johnson (play-by-play) and John Smoltz (analyst) will call the action.

Selig talks MLB Playoff Expansion on TBS

TBS' Dick Stockton and Ron Darling interviewed MLB Commissioner Bud Selig during today's Civil Rights Game (Phillies @ Braves) regarding expanding the number of teams in the Postseason

Selig on the possibility of expanding the number of teams involved in the MLB Postseason: “I am (looking at expanding the Postseason), in fact, John Schuerholz of the Braves and David Montgomery of the Phillies (are here), both are club presidents and they are on that committee and we’ve had conversations about it...I really believe that 10 out of 30 (teams making the Postseason) is still a good number. It’s by far the least number of any other sport as you well know. We’ve run all kinds of schedules and things and we have a 14-man committee with four managers (including) Joe Torre who now works for us, but (Tigers manager) Jim Leyland, (Cardinals manager) Tony La Russa and (Angels manager) Mike Scioscia and four general managers, four owners and then (author) George Will and (Hall of Famer) Frank Robinson (are on the committee). I can tell you, and everything has been very confidential but they won’t mind. This group has voted 14-0 for more playoffs. We’re moving there but we have details to work out and the details are difficult. But I’m very confident that we’re moving inevitably.”

Stockton & Darling discussed Selig's comments

Stockton on MLB potentially expanding the number of teams that qualify for Postseason: “Interesting that Commissioner Selig told us about the vote and how emphatic it was for Postseason play.”

Darling: “You would have thought with expenditures there would have been some dissention but I think that after the wild card and its been here for so long, that everyone wants to get more teams in play. It’s even better for the fans because it gives them the opportunity to think that they have a chance to get into the playoffs.”

Stockton: “Like you said, not all managers agree, but 14-0?”

Darling: “I was very surprised by that vote but it lets you know where baseball is going to go. I don’t think the hard part is adding a couple of wild cards, it’s the format of how you’re going to do that to make sure you’re not playing into mid-November.”
